Fairground Foundation

Fairground Foundation and ecostore were created in partnership to support the health and environmental well-being of communities.

In 1993, after years of working in the non-profit sector, Malcolm Rands was determined to find a more sustainable way to generate charitable funding. He wanted to tackle one of the biggest problems he’d experienced in the sector which was the disproportionate amount of time, energy and other resources that went into fundraising compared to the needs of the different projects.

Malcolm imagined a sustainable model in which a not for profit was set up in partnership with a philosophically aligned commercial business. A percentage of profits from the business would then be channelled into the not-for-profit to provide ongoing funding. While ecostore provides the products, information and service to make this happen, Fairground helps to create a healthier, more sustainable world through courageous leadership and ‘on-the-ground’ action. Malcolm says,

Fairground’s challenge is to imagine the future we’d love to have in 20 year’s time and to make that happen now.

A percentage of ecostore profits and other resources are channelled into a not-for-profit called the Fairground Foundation that focuses on creating a healthier, more sustainable world through courageous leadership and ‘on-the-ground’ action. Its purpose is to create projects that make a difference in people’s lives and to the communities they live in, particularly in the areas of health, culture and sustainability.

Future-proof neighbourhoods project.
Fairground has started a consultation process with a wide group of architects, town planners, developers and building suppliers to look at high density eco housing close to the heart of Auckland city. Malcolm brings his experience of founding one of New Zealand’s first permaculture eco-villages to the table. With the population increasing and becoming more urbanised ecostore believes it’s imperative to create practical, commercially successful green solutions for healthy housing and sustainable living. ecostore’s plan is to create a vibrant, healthy urban eco-village that’s so successful it will be copied by developers worldwide.
